Because of the way in which the fabric is constructed in two discrete passes, Tunisian crochet presents unique opportunities to play with color and texture that are not available in either standard crochet or knitting.  Below we present some tips for keeping the fabric tidy and the color changes smooth whether you change colors at the beginning of the forward pass or the reverse pass.

Changing Colors at the start of the Forward Pass

Tunisian Crochet Changing Colors, Step 1

Changing colors at the start of the forward pass actually starts at the last stitch of the prior-row reverse pass!

When 2 loops remain on the hook from the prior-row reverse pass, drop the new yarn, and yarn over and pull through the new yarn for the last stitch of the row.

Tunisian Crochet Changing Colors, Step 2

Work the forward pass as desired.  (Tunisian simple stitch shown).  The color of the forward pass yarn affects the color of the vertical bars of the fabric.

Changing Colors at the Start of the Reverse Pass

Tunisian Crochet Changing Colors, Step 3

Changing colors at the start of the reverse pass begins after the last stitch of the forward pass is complete.

Pass the current yarn over the front of the hook as pictured.  Yarn over with the new yarn and pull through the strand of yarn placed over the hook and the last loop on the hook.

Tunisian Crochet Changing Colors, Step 4

Yarn over with the new yarn and pull through two loops - repeat this until the end of the row as you normally would.  The color of the reverse pass yarn affects the color of the horizontal threads of the fabric.
