Quick Overview

You choose the position - flexible high/ low whorl drop spindles!

Wool Tree Mill drop spindles can be used in either the low or high whorl position.

Wool Tree Mill engineers its drop spindles with most of the weight of the whorl shaped to the outer rim: This adds greatly to the amount of spin time. Another exclusive feature of these drop spindles is the sleek little hooks: Once you try them you will see how they make a difference!

Wool Tree uses an African Mahogany called Sapele. Sapele starts out a little redder than most mahoganies, but browns with exposure to light (like Cherry). After use it will transform into a red-tinted brown.

Wool Tree Mill is a family-owned California business and make each spindle in the USA using American hardwoods. Find out more about Wool Tree Mill.

Details

Versions of the drop spindle have been dated back to 5,000 BCE and they are still very much in use today. This is the simplest and most portable method of spinning yarn. Our solid mahogany drop spindles are beautiful, for sure, and they have been exhaustively re-designed and tested many times to achieve maximum spin duration and perfect balance. Our spindles can be used in either high-whorl or low-whorl positions, depending on the spinner’s purpose and preference. Our Greek-Cross design provides the best spin yet. It is also beautiful just lying around your studio space.

Available in large.

The best weight and whorl placement for a drop spindle varies with the type of fiber being spun.

  • Wool spinning needs a relatively heavier and larger spindle.  The large spindle is best for medium-weight wool yarn.
  • Light spindles are best for fine textures and delicate yarns.
  • Choice of high or low whorl position is more a matter of personal preference and varies both historically and regionally.
